FEBRUARY Plant of the Month

This February, we have chosen Hellebores as our Plant of the Month. Read all about hellebores, where to plant them and why we love them!

Helleborus, commonly called Hellebores, are members of the Ranunculaceae Buttercup family.

Hellebores are clump forming hardy perennials with many being evergreen, flowering from late winter to mid spring. The flowers (actually sepals) are long lastingin a wide variety of colours, even speckled.

They grow best in a moist, fertile, humus rich soil in partial shade. For strong healthy growth, incorporate organic matter when planting and mulch annually in autumn. Avoid dry or waterlogged soil and provide shelter from strong cold winds.

Hellebores are effective when grown in groups in a mixed border or naturalised in a woodland garden. Smaller species such as Helleborus niger are ideal for rock gardens. Hellebores look good when naturalised with ferns, snowdrops, cyclamen coum and hederifolium.

In store throughout February, you'll find our complete range of Hellebores and more advice is available from our helpful staff.
