Our Gardeners Questionned! |
|
As the sun set on a beautiful April day, our panel - comprising Joe Maiden, Graham Porter and Steve Smith - took questions from our eager audience at the 2nd Gardener’s Question Time at our Pennine Garden Centre. Discussion all about dahlias and tomatoes, including grafted varieties for a bumper stock as well as allotment gardening and how to solve clubroot kicked off the evening. Our panel then responded to a desperate plea to successfully grow freesia after years of failure, frustration with blind daffodils and fury at leylandii destroying any chance of a lawn, due to their root action. To keep bay alive through another vicious winter generated debate, and our panel suggested as much protection as possible and, if in a container, place in a cold greenhouse or garage through winter. And our favourite story of the evening was how cacti funded Joe Maiden’s college days at Askham Bryan. (He potted up his extensive collection and sold them to florists in and around Penrith!)
