Greener Shopping at Armitage's
|
|
Here at Armitages we are always looking for ways to reduce the enviromental impact of shopping in our stores.
Greener Product Choices
- We actively source and promote where possible UK grown plants and local produce, reducing our carbon footprint and supporting local producers.
- When we have to purchase from outside our local economy we will always choose the least damaging methods of manufacture and distribution possible.
- We aim to buy FSC or similar Forest stewardship timber and wood-pulp products, supporting rural economies, and sustainable arboriculture.
- We aim to buy chemical free and organic products to complement our ranges, allowing you the customer to make your own decisions about what product to buy.
- We aim to provide you with a range of peat free and reduced peat composts and growing media allowing you to make a reasoned judgement about which product you want to use.
Cafes that Care
- Enjoy seasonal menus that promote the best of what’s available now from locally sourced butchers, bakers and farms wherever possible, reducing food miles and supporting our local economy.
- We are part of the DeliciouslyYorkshire breakfast scheme which ensures a minimum of 5 of the breakfast ingredients come from Yorkshire
- We aim to buy Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance, tropic and subtropic products which ethically support communities in developing countries.
- Our cafes at both centres compost all organic waste, recycle all glass bottles, clean plastic and cardboard.
- All paper and card products such as stickers, serviettes and take out boxes are made from recycled or sustainable wood-pulp.
Bio-degradable Carrier Bags
- Our carrier bags and boot liners are made from bio-degradable plastics
- We offer cardboard carry trays at every till made form a combination of recycled cardboard and sustainable wood-pulp , they are recyclable or compostable.
- Customers can also choose to buy an Armitage’s re-usable hessian shopper
- We also don’t mind if you want to bring your own shopping bags.
Recycling Opportunities for Customers
- We offer a used battery disposal facility so customers can deposit used batteries for recycling.
- Used plastic plant pot recycling boxes are available at both centres for customers to bring their unwanted plastic plant pots to and take home any they wish to re-use.
- Any broken or unwanted electrical items purchased from one of our centres can be returned for recycling.
Paper Hand Towels in our Washroom Facilities
- We have taken the decision not to provide electric hand dryers as part of our efforts to reduce our electricity consumption, offering instead paper hand towels that are made from FSC approved sustainable wood pulp. This means more trees are planted than harvested which supports the rural economy and, because growing trees use up more atmospheric carbon than mature trees, we are also supporting an activity which reduuces carbon. The added bonus is that you get a much more hygeinic, efficient and effective way to dry your hands! Help us even more by only using as many as you really need to.
