The winter may be well and truly setting in and the frosts are now the norm, but you can still add colour and interest to your garden with plants, all available in the garden centre throughout December.
In December we recommend you plant:
Sarcococca hookerana digyna
- Christmas Box is a compact evergreen shrub with glossy foliage
- Small white fragrant flowers open during the winter months
- Prefers shade and is tolerant of most fertile soils
- Black berries appear after flowering
- Useful plant for cutting for inclusion in flower arrangements
Helleborus Niger
- The Christmas Rose is a hardy herbaceous perennial
- Distinctive white flowers appear during December to February
- Prefers dappled shade position
- Is tolerant of most fertile well drained soils
- Distinctive foliage appears after flowering
Gaultheria procumbens Nana
- Prostrate carpet forming evergreen shrub with dark green foliage
- Produces masses of small red berries throughout the winter months
- Is tolerant of light shade but does require lime-free peaty soils
- Small white flowers appear in spring and summer
- Interesting shrub for the front of an acid soil border
Camellia japonica varieties
- Medium size evergreen hardy shrub which thrives in lime-free soils
- Produces masses of outstanding large, single or double flowers
- All varieties prefer semi-shade or North facing position
- Plant in peaty soils for best results.
- Keep buds & flowers out of the early morning winter sun
Skimmia japonica varieties
- Small to medium dome shaped evergreen shrub
- Produces open cones of white fragrant flowers in summer
- Distinctive red berries during the winter
- Very tolerant of light shade and most fertile well drained soils
- Variety Rubella has red flower buds which open white in spring
