Plants for November

Mahonia x media ‘Charity’

  • Popular medium to large evergreen shrub
  • Striking long drooping spikes of yellow flowers in late autumn
  • Flowers followed by blue-black berries in winter
  • Holly like glossy prickly foliage
  • Tolerates most well drained soils and most positions in the garden

Prunus subhirtella Autumnalis

  • This small deciduous tree is referred to as the Autumn Cherry
  • Semi-double small white flowers throughout November to March
  • Tolerates most soils and most positions but prefers full sun
  • Ideal tree for the smaller garden
  • Nice golden yellow tints to foliage in the autumn

Ilex aquifolium  

  • The Common Holly is an easy to grow evergreen shrub, small tree
  • It is tolerant of most soils and most conditions
  • It is equally at home managed as a hedge
  • There are many varieties, often variegated bearing berries
  • Very adaptable and good for decoration at Christmas time

Leucothoe fontanesiana Rainbow

  • Small to medium evergreen shrub for lime free peaty soils
  • Arching stems with cream, yellow and pink streaked foliage
  • Foliage at its best during late autumn and early winter
  • Small white pitcher shaped flowers appear in May
  • Good low growing, ground covering shrub for shade areas

Cornus sanguinea 

  • Common native hedgerow Dogwood
  • Greenish red flushed stems with brilliant purple autumn colour
  • Black fruits produced in late autumn winter
  • Best where planted with other coloured stem varieties
  • Tolerates heavy wet soils and is best in full sun
