What is automatic watering?
It’s a very simple concept! Automatic watering is a system that takes water from the tap to your plants using a simple network of narrow pipes and outlets hidden in the garden. It waters your plants properly all through the season, even if you are away. All systems can be controlled manually or by a timer and most systems can be installed in a few hours and all can be extended as your garden grows. This type of watering solution is therefore perfect for holiday watering.
How to create an automatic watering system in your garden.
You can create your own Hozelock watering system and make it work automatically by combining it with a Hozelock timer. Individual items are available to make a truly bespoke system that exactly suits your needs. Follow the ABC guide to creating your own watering system and you won’t look back!
A - Tap Connectors
- The tap connection is vital. It connects the automatic watering system to the mains water supply
- Always use a pressure reducer to control the water pressure to ensure the best performance
- All installations can be automated by adding a Hozelock water computer

B - Pipeline
- Use the 13mm supply tube to distribute the water around the garden and then 4mm micro tubing to take the water from the supply tube to the plants
- Use elbows, t-pieces and connectors to make the network. Use wall clips and stakes to secure it in place. The pipe can be buried up to 5cm in ground or covered with mulch
Tip: Save water and help your plants by using micro tube to position drippers and spinklers close to the roots and in the shade of leaves. This way your plants will take up more water, the soil will remain moist and evaporation will be lower.
C - Drippers
- You can fit any combination of drippers, micro jets and mini sprinklers depending on the plants and where you want to water
- The area covered and flow rate varies depending on the dripper selected. Click on a component on the diagram to view the properties such as area, flow rate, cost and pack quantities
Tip: Experiment with different drippers and positioning until you get it right. You can always correct mistakes by plugging holes in the supply tube with blanking plugs.
Complete Kits
Unless you have set up an automatic watering system before then you are best starting with one the the Hozelock Micro
Irrigation starter kits. The kits contain all the basics needed to get you started, such as a pressure regulator, hole punch, supply tube / micro tube, connectors and importantly installation instructions.
Also included in the kits, dependant on the kit selected, are misters, drippers, micro jets and mini sprinklers. Once you have installed a watering system from a kit you can expand on the system with Hozelock's range of micro irrigation components. You should also feel more confident about what you need after having first set up the starter kit.
Before you decide on whether to buy a kit, it is worth noting that the kits also offer a substantial saving over buying the Hozelock micro irrigation components individually. Even if the kits contain parts you may not need its still worth comparing the cost of the individual parts needed against the price of the complete kits.
