Bulbs are truly amazing additions to the garden bringing colour, scent - even drama – after many dreary winter days. Plant bulbs now and they will work their magic over the winter months to give us a colourful welcome next year!
Requiring very little effort, it’s as simple as choosing the varieties you love and giving them the right conditions in which to flourish.
Most bulbs love full sun and with trees in bud when they flower, this could be just about anywhere in your garden.
But do remember, woodland bulbs such as anemones and snowdrops will prefer a little cool shade!
Our Top Tips for Success!
-
Rich, well draining soil with a balanced PH will feed the underground bulbs and fuel growth. Prepare the soil by digging to a depth of at least 23cm/9in, adding bulb fibre or bulb compost to improve moisture retention.
-
Healthy bulbs are firm, clean and free of mould with no obvious signs of damage or disease.
-
Plant bulbs with the growing point uppermost and, as a general rule of thumb, plant at least 2 or 3 times the depth of the bulb with a similar distance between individual bulbs. Use a bulb planter to easily remove earth to the correct depth
-
Don’t plant bulbs if the soil is very dry, waterlogged or frozen. Store until conditions improve
