After the harsh winter we’ve endured it is important to give your pond some extra attention as the weather starts to improve and you look to spend more time enjoying your water feature.
During mild periods tidy up around the pond, gathering up any leaves lodged in the netting and remove other debris which has been collected. This is often a good time to clear any silt and debris which has accumulated on the bottom of the pond.
Lift all submerged pumps and carry out the following maintenance procedure:
- remove and clean strainer
- remove and cleaner impeller assembly,
- take off any build-up of limescale (limescale can seriously affect pump performance)
Water Quality
Decomposing material left in the pond over winter can unsettle the water quality and create poor conditions for fish survival so it is important you test the water quality for pH levels and ammonia and nitrite. If neccessary undertake a change of up to 20% of the pond water to dilute high ammonia and nitrite levels.
Fish Care
It is unlikely that fish will be active as temperatures seldom get above 8C around this time of year, so there is no requirement to actively feed.
We have a range of pond vacuums, silt removers, gloves and waders to help tidy up your pond – as well as a host of other accessories to brighten your feature - so pop in to our pets and aquatics department for a look around. Our staff will be more than happy to offer specialist advice about making the most out of your pond.
