Your garden can bring you lots of pleasure! As the seasons change, so too does your garden and at Armitage’s Garden Centres in Shelley & Birchencliffe, we have everything you need to keep your garden looking fantastic – whatever the season! Of course, there is always something to keep you busy in the garden and here’s what our outdoor team at Armitage’s recommend you should be doing with your outdoor living space this month. Potted bulbs Add a splash of colour to your garden this spring with potted bulbs. They’re ideal for both containers and beds – even on windowsills indoors.
Potatoes You can't beat the delicious flavour of freshly dug potatoes – and they’re so easy to grow. Buy your seed potatoes at Armitage’s and choose from our excellent range of early and maincrop varieties.
Reduce weeding time Now’s the time to plant ground cover shrubs and perennials to help keep weeds down. And to save more time on weeding and give all plants the best possible start, don’t forget to buy weed-suppressing membrane. To hide it, cover with bark, gravel or similar materials.
Build a bed for acid loving plants Plant rhododendrons, azaleas, heathers and camellias now and don’t worry if you don’t have the right soil to grow these acid lovers. Simply buy some ericaceous compost and pop them into large containers or make raised beds for them.
Winter pruning Now’s the time to give apple and pear trees, grape vines and wisteria their winter prune. We have everything you need to do it properly including saws, long-handled pruners, secateurs and gloves. After pruning, feed with a granular fertiliser for the best results.
Top dress containers Now’s a good time to check plants growing in containers. If they have become potbound, it may be time to repot them or plant them in the garden. Those that can remain in their pots for at least another year will benefit from top dressing. Remove the top inch or so of compost and replace it with fresh compost and add a controlled-release fertiliser for perfect results.
Plant winter shrubs Fill your garden with some seasonal colour with a selection of winter-flowering shrubs. They can be planted at any time providing the soil isn’t frozen solid or waterlogged. Choose from mahonia, viburnums, sarcococca, witch hazel, winter jasmine and winter-flowering heathers and shrubby honeysuckles. Many have the added bonus of strong perfume – so plant them close to the house. Give them the best possible start by digging in plenty of organic matter – such as compost or composted bark – and add some general granular fertiliser.
